19 July 2015 city of Odessa, Ukraine, celebrated the first ever Sea Sunday holiday. Seafarers of all ages were invited to join the festive celebration in the open air organized by the Ukrainian Maritime Trade Unions’ Federation (UMTUF), charity fund Assol, Pivdennyi bank and other partners.
Maksym Sliusarevskyi, UMTUF chairman, reckons that Ukraine needs an annual holiday for seafarers. Trade union administrators highly appreciated the idea of organizing a family holiday in a huge local park instead of ‘traditional celebration in the closed space of a banqueting room’. “They like seafarers in Odessa, – Sliusarevskyi told the Professional Seafarer. – That’s why authorities, cafes and amusement services – even a scientific museum! – readily supported this event.”
Festival visitors were invited to take part in a family lunch on throw blankets. Veterans were treated with a cocktail dinner organized by UMTUF. Odessa chiefs did the cooking in the open air. They offered traditional grill-burgers, mouth-watering Spanish paella with seafood, fried fish and other tasty eats and drinks.
‘This holiday gives a wonderful opportunity for seafarers to meet each other, recall past, spend time with friends and family, – shares his impressions Dmitriy Dubak, Columbia Shipmanagement (CSM) boatswain. – We expect only the best from the holiday and we’d also like this event to become an annual holiday in future’.
Entertainment program included amusements for guests of all ages. Museum of Interesting Science exhibited physics puzzles and brain-twisters to tease and amuse kids and adults. The Hawaiian dance school hold a free master class for all comers. Children settled on swings and slides and created funny paintings from multicolored sand.
Young artists also took part in the drawing contest for little ones, entitled ‘I like sea’. Adults participated in a gastronomic competition. Besides everybody could prove themselves at the ‘tug of war’ contest, music quiz and other activities. For example, UMTUF offered ingenious Odessites invent the best slogan for the maritime trade union. Winners were awarded with tickets to local CINEMA multiplex.
Sea-themed decorations and installations were a real delight to the eye. Maritime scapes devotees could also feast their eyes on photo exhibition ‘Happy Minutes’, which depicted sea and seafarers’ life.
Festival organisers were intended to hold this event in future in the annual format. This intention received wide support from the holiday visitors.
