The entry into force of the “ Maritime Labour Convention ” , 2006 ( MLC 2006 ) makes it necessary for shipowners to look for a reliable social partner among the trade unions , with whom it would be possible to dialogue in a constructive way and ensure a proper level of social protection to the seafarers .
It seems there is nothing complicated in that . You can search of the registered Ukrainian marine trade unions in the Google or other search system and choose those one with which you will sign a Collective Bargaining Agreement and which would offer more advantageous terms for the shipowners . But this is not simple as it may appear on the face of it . At present , there are some tens of the registered marine trade unions in Ukraine . Most of them exist “only on paper” and cannot ensure the proper level of social guarantees for the seafarers . There is nothing to say about a level of representativeness of such the unions at all . It is doubtful whether such the union will become a reputable social partner .
The managers of our Agreements Unit are always ready to explain (in English language also ) and elucidate of what are preferences to co-operate with the Ukrainian Marine Trade Unions’ Federation in the capacities of social partner for the shipowners and guarantor for the seafarers .
